In Part 2 of the Speaking test, you will be asked to talk about a specific topic. The examiner will give you a booklet showing your question, and the ideas you need to talk about. You will have time to make notes first.

Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!

1. How long should you speak for?
2. How long will you have to make notes?
3. You will need to bring paper and a pen.
4. You can write on the booklet.
5. How will you know when to stop talking?

Organizing thoughts

There are four instructions on your booklet telling you what to talk about. It is important to address each one. You will usually be asked to choose a person, place, time or thing and explain why you choose them. Also, you may be asked to describe one or two specific examples and talk about your own feelings and reactions.

2. Watch Emanuele giving his talk.

Look at the task that Emanuele was given.

Describe a time when you helped someone.

You should say:

  • who you helped and why
  • how you helped this person.

and explain how you felt about helping this person.

Lack of ideas

4. Some candidates run out of ideas after one minute. Watch Saida’s response. How does the examiner help?

If you ran out of ideas, you can:

  • Look at your notes
refer back to an earlier point
  • think about grammar: Present? Past? Future?
  • talk about feelings
  • give more examples
  • give a longer description
